Subject DTBM Repair
The warranty on digital talking-book machines (DTBMs) manufactured more than thirteen months ago will expire soon. The return rate of players for warranty repair has been extremely low, and at this time the repair requirement is too small to require a commercial repair contract. NLS will periodically review the need for commercial repair.
Machine-lending agencies (MLAs) should use local resources, especially the volunteer repair network, to repair and refurbish players. The NLS Inventory Management Section can provide parts and tools to MLAs and volunteers to service and repair DTBMs. The NLS parts-ordering system is currently being revised to improve the process of ordering repair parts for digital machines. Until this revision is complete, repair groups that need any parts listed as “back ordered” should contact the NLS equipment repair officer, Kevin Watson, at [log in to unmask] to request the part. Because of limited availability, parts currently listed as “back ordered” will be supplied only as needed. In general, MLAs and repair groups should not attempt to build a local parts inventory.
Network libraries and MLAs may order repair parts and tools through PICS. Volunteer groups may order repair parts and tools at www.loc.gov/nlsparts. Alternatively an e-mail may be sent to [log in to unmask] for order processing. For more information on how to order repair parts and tools please review Network Bulletin 05-63, at www.loc.gov/nls/networkdocs/bulletins/2005/0563.html, and Machines and Accessories Report 05-07, at www.loc.gov/nls/networkdocs/machines/2005/0507.html.
To assist in servicing and maintaining DTBMs, NLS has made the following materials available to MLAs and repair groups:
· DTBM Service Manual
· DTBM Library Guide
· DTBM Repair Kit
· DTBM Evaluation Machine
Both the service manual and library guide are available for download at http://rt.loc.gov/MDD. Under the section labeled Digital Talking-Book Machine Information, select the Documentation link to access the download page.
The repair kit includes an ESD mat, a wrist strap, a ground strap, and the hand tools that should be used when servicing the machine. The evaluation machine is intended for the MLA or repair group to keep as a permanent training tool for staff. Both the repair kit and DTBM evaluation machine may be ordered by contacting the NLS equipment repair officer, Kevin Watson, at [log in to unmask] Only one repair kit per group is available at this time as supplies are limited. Evaluation machines are extremely limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

DTBMs currently have 30 repair parts. The procedure for ordering parts will be the same as for C-1s. The part numbers and descriptions are listed below:
Completed PCB assembly
Upper housing sub-assembly (standard DTBM, with speaker, cable, and dock seal installed)
Upper housing sub-assembly (advanced DTBM, with speaker, cable, and dock seal installed)
Lower housing sub-assembly (with labels, cable tie mount, and battery foam)
Panel (battery access)
Keypad (standard DTBM)
Keypad (advanced DTBM)
Cable (power supply)
AC power cable
Assembly (cartridge USB cable/connectors)
Assembly (A/T USB cable/connectors)
Assembly (headphone cable/connectors)
Dock seal, upper
Screw, battery access panel
Cable tie mount
Foam (battery compartment)
Cover (A/T USB connector)
Speaker, cable, and connector
Adhesive shim (speaker)
Note: Although the printed circuit board (PCB), D-P-01, is listed as a repair part, NLS does not anticipate the need for replacement of the PCB in a machine. If the PCB in a machine is damaged to the point of replacement, the machine should be scrapped.
DTBM repair tools
Individual hand tools for disassembly of the DTBM and removal of battery cover are available. Part numbers and descriptions are listed below. MLAs and repair groups are encouraged to order only one set of tools per shop.
