-----Original Message----- From Rob DeLand: "... he points out how the consolidation of the music labels and the radio stations (Clear Channel) after deregulation have caused a corporate apathy towards developing artists and more focus on selling product..." Hopefully he also mentions the massive consolidation of retail record outlets and live venues which preceded the consolidation of radio and labels that had provided the infrastructure where artists used to grow. This commonly repeated idea that record labels "developed" artists is a myth as far as anything I ever saw. Motown, where I worked, was a management company and music publisher that developed artists and songwriters. Most labels simply signed the cream of the crop who could already draw big audiences at local venues.
