A solid, real ground certainly is helpful, but a common ground may help when the system consists of multiple boxes. Ground loops and hom can result. Try plugging everything into one multiple outlet strip such as a surge suppressor. If any of your electronics use only a two prong plug then run a wire from its metal frame to the ground of the surge suppressor.
