I'm also always working with the idea that generally some are not filed and that if the shelves are 'too tight,' there's no space to file new acquisitions, which are a constant.

Hi Eugene:

You got me curious enough to test the rule before I go estimate a friend's collection.

With only typical American cardboard non-gatefold LPs, it's about 80 per foot in a firm but not over-tight shelf. A typical mix of mostly single LPs but some gatefolds and a couple of box sets comes out to 75 in a foot. A shelf of only gatefolds was 46 per foot.

So I would say that a safe rule of thumb for a mixed shelf is probably 60-65, depending on how heavy the mix is with gatefolds. By gatefold I mean single albums in a gatefold, such as Impulse and Command from the 60's. Double albums measure out to about the same as two single albums. Box sets are slightly less horizontal space per LP, on average, although some classical and opera sets are actually wider because they'll have 2 LPs and a large book.

I think 60-65 is a good rule of thumb, however, and I'd lean toward 65 except in the case of a clear gatefold-heavy collection (ie a jazz collector with all the Impulse LPs).

IIRC, my calculation on lps is 75-80 per foot, varying depending on whether they are gatefold, double lp, etc.

Hi All:

Are there any rules of thumb about how many LPs, on average there are per foot of horizontal space? Same for CDs? Perhaps it's per yard or some other measure?

Obviously, this would be "on average," not an exact measure because some CDs are in thin cases and some LPs are in gatefolds while others are in multi-albums. Also some 2CD cases are double-wide while some are single-wide, etc etc etc.

Thanks!
