One item that was not discussed was the damage that you can do just unwinding a tape at any speed. I have seen one where the mag coat was stripped off and adhered to the back coat. This was the condition in which I received the tape--it was horrid and there was huge crosstalk and no real opportunity to repair the tape. While I know my good friend Jim is not a fan of baking, but I don't know any other way of addressing a tape that far gone. I've seen acetate 3M201 pull oxide off as well, but not to the extent this one SSS tape was damaged. Good luck removing the blobs--I have never experienced that. Unofficially I might suggest experimenting with the now banned 1:1:1 trichloroethane using this modified film rewind approach. Although banned, it may still be available in small quantities from chemistry supply facilities, and yes it is expensive. Fortunately you do not need much. Read the MSDS very carefully, handle very carefully, adequate ventilation, follow all guidelines, hands end eye protection, ventilator - all of it. This will be a slow hand process. As you get experience you will be able to remove the goo and if you are careful in your application leave the stuff under it. Too much solvent and too much pressure and you will wipe all of it. You "polish" slowly foot by foot winding the completed and clean tape on the take up side. This was exacerbated further by baking.
