Great list of interesting places!
However, the Velvet Lounge is closed.  It had a rough time after the beloved founder and tenor saxophonist Fred Anderson passed away, and finally closed last year.

There are other venues that highlight jazz and experimental music around town, though, where you can still see the artists that frequented the Velvet. 

Checkerboard, Rosa's, and Buddy Guy's are good general suggestions. I would add the Hungry Brain on Sunday nights. This list has some good info, though they too still have the Velvet on the page.
