The Future of the 1410 Librarian Series:  Opportunities for Further Discussion

Continuing the discussion on the future the Office of Personnel Management's Position Classification Standard for Librarian Series, GS-1410, FLICC is offering two discussion sessions focusing on the questions raised in the previous session on February 15, 2012.



This facilitated panel discussion will look at a number of "take away" ideas from the previous meeting:

*        Taking value and pride in being a librarian.

*        Refining skills and position descriptions.

*        Changing hiring guidelines and perceptions of librarians.

*        Forming "hybrid" positions with jobs and skills of other professions.

*        Working within the constraints of the federal personnel management.

*        Promoting an understanding of the qualities and skills librarians bring to government work.

*        Charting a course when the viability of federal libraries is tied to organization chart or hierarchy.



      With these takeaways in mind, the discussion will focus on the pros and cons of possible courses of action to update the 1410 series.*



      Possible courses of action include:

*        Updating the tasks, knowledge, skills and abilities currently identified for federal librarians.

*        Considering a move to the 2210 Information Technology Series

*        Broaden the 1400 series to include traditional librarians and for positions in a non-space specific positions requiring content organization, management, and access.

*        Change the name of the 1410 series or make the 1400 series more inclusive.



(*The purpose of the discussion will be to explore options and discuss the pros, cons, and possible outcomes of each option; it will not result in a decision on what option should be adopted.)
