SUBJECT: Cassette machine disposal
Recently some cassette machines were shipped without boxes or labels to UNICOR in Atwater, California. Machine-lending agencies are reminded that when sending any cassette machine for disposal the following procedures must be followed:
· Batteries must be removed. Batteries should be sent separately to INMETCO.
· Cassette machines must be placed in a box or container for shipping. Over-pack boxes may be saved and reused for this purpose. No box should exceed seventy pounds in weight.
· Each box must be clearly labeled with the appropriate disposal address, as outlined in Operations Alert 12-14, and must include the machine-lending agency’s return address and a Free Matter for the Blind statement where postage would be affixed.
· These boxes may be palletized, but the address should be clearly visible on each of the boxes. Pallets must be secured appropriately. Check with your local post office for height and weight restrictions for pallets.
Under no circumstances will unboxed, unlabeled machines be authorized for disposal.
Failure to follow these procedures could jeopardize disposal and/or the Free Matter Mailing privilege.
