Tom, out of curiosity, of the edited 35mm 3-stripes you've seen, were the cuts/edits splices made with editing tape across the back of the mag. or hot-spliced?

It depended on the piece and performers, but most MLP tapes were not strewn with splices. In retakes, it would usually be a whole phrase or section. There were exceptions, but not many. I think that was common practice in those days -- let the conductor play a piece through, do a playback and see what needs fixing. The music director (score-keeper) will have marked problems he heard. The conductor and/or producer may not like the pacing or textures, in which case large sections would be redone. The good orchestras were aces at their game in those days. Probably the best of the best recording orchestra in the 60's was the LSO because they recorded so often with so many conductors.
