Question: If we convert an AACR2 LCNH record to RDA (1XX remains unchanged), what should we do with an RDA form in a 7XX field added during the test? Should we delete these?
Thanks!

PCC RDA Update, May 17, 2012
RDA in NACO Training Modules
The
RDA in NACO Training Modules are now available. Based on the results of the survey that the PCC Secretariat sent to NACO liaisons and NACO funnel coordinators on March 29, 2012, the training will be coordinated by groups—“Group 1” consists of 19 NACO institutional
members and 2 NACO funnels; this group will take the training in May 2012 and will participate in the two mandatory post-training webinars in June 2012. “Group 2” consists of 16 NACO institutional members and 2 NACO funnels; this group will take the training
in June-July 2012 and will participate in the two mandatory post-training webinars in August 2012. The remaining four groups will follow a similar pattern. Please check the list of
PCC/NACO Institutions and NACO Funnels Scheduled for RDA in NACO Training Modules to see when your NACO institution or NACO funnel is scheduled to take the training. Good news-- NACO institutions and funnels that completed the RDA in NACO Training survey
should all be offered their first choice of training periods. The PCC Secretariat will contact each group before the assigned training period begins. If you are a NACO liaison or a NACO funnel coordinator and you do not see your institution or funnel on the
list, please notify the PCC Secretariat at [log in to unmask].
NACO funnel members: your funnel coordinator may take the training before you do and then serve as a trainer or a liaison in the funnel training. So do not be alarmed if you see your funnel listed for the
training—your funnel coordinator will be updating you on how and when your training will take place.
Although the RDA in NACO Training Modules are accessible to anyone at any time, NACO members not trained in RDA may not begin to contribute RDA NACO authority records to the LC/NACO Authority File until
the mandatory post-training webinars and the mandatory post-training review period have been completed.
Recommendations of the PCC Acceptable Headings Implementation Task Group
At the PCC Operations Committee meetings held at the Library of Congress on May 3-4, 2012, PCC Chair Linda Barnhart made the following announcement:
“On Wednesday, April 25, 2012, the PCC Policy Committee supported the recommendation below (“Alternate 3”) on the redistribution of records in the LC/NACO Authority File in preparation for PCC Day One for
RDA Authority Records, March 31, 2013. The recommendation was drafted by the PCC Acceptable Headings Implementation Task Group, Gary Strawn, Chair.”
After the OpCo meetings ended on Friday, Linda sent a message to the PCClist describing this recommendation and its impact on users of the LC/NACO Authority File.
A document “RDA Recoding of the LC/NACO Authority File: What does this mean for you?” was distributed at the OpCo meetings and was included in Linda’s message to the PCClist. That document included a section
on what types of changes RDA-trained NACO catalogers could make in the LC/NACO Authority File. Here is additional information
on what was meant as “RDA-trained NACO catalogers” in the document, and more specific details on the timing:
·
After the initial redistribution of the authority records in Phase One, scheduled to take place in Summer 2012:
·
RDA-trained NACO catalogers may reformulate non-RDA headings in NARs with 667 fields added in Phase One,
to become RDA authorized access points and recode the records to RDA (008/10 = z, 040 $e rda) as needed.
In order to reformulate non-RDA headings to RDA, you must be an RDA-trained NACO cataloger, meaning that you currently are contributing RDA authority records to the LC/NACO Authority File. RDA-trained
catalogers or institutions intending to reformulate non-RDA headings to RDA authorized access points should notify the PCC Secretariat ([log in to unmask]) at the outset (not each time a record is re-coded).
A few exceptions to this temporary restriction on reformulating non-RDA headings to RDA until after the redistribution of the authority records in Phase One will be approved on a case by case basis
by the PCC Secretariat.
·
At any time after reading this message:
·
AACR2 records whose 1XX is suitable for use under RDA will not be mechanically re-coded as RDA. RDA-trained NACO catalogers may optionally re-code these records
to RDA, as long as the 1XX remains unchanged.
In order to optionally re-code AACR2 authority records whose 1XX is suitable for use under RDA, you must be an RDA-trained NACO cataloger, meaning that you currently are contributing RDA authority
records to the LC/NACO Authority File. RDA elements may be added to the re-coded authority records, but the 1XX must not be changed.
Any AACR2 authority heading used as an access point in an RDA BIBCO record should be re-coded to RDA, as long as the 1XX remains unchanged.
RDA-trained catalogers or institutions intending to re-code AACR2 authority records whose 1XX is suitable for use under RDA should notify the PCC Secretariat ([log in to unmask])
at the outset (not each time a record is re-coded).
·
AACR2 1XX fields suitable for use under RDA may be used as the base element in an extended RDA authorized access point.
When using an AACR2 1XX heading as the base element in an extended RDA authorized access point, the AACR2 authority record must be re-coded to RDA. Optionally, any dependent records
(such as name-title or subordinate body records) may also be re-coded to RDA.
Undifferentiated Personal Names: Call for Community Discussion:
On March 29, 2012, PoCo initiated community discussion via the PCC and other listservs of the concept of
Undifferentiated Personal Name Authority Records in preparation for a forum on the topic at ALA Annual in Anaheim. The document has been updated and reposted to the PCC web site.
RDA Task Group Activity—May 2012 update:
Most of the PCC RDA Task Groups have completed their work. Two task groups, the
AACR2 & RDA Acceptable Heading Categories Task Group, and the
Standing Committee on Training RDA Training Materials Task Group, have final report deadlines in May and June. The final reports and recommendations of the other task groups were presented at the PCC Operations Committee meetings on May 3-4,
2012. PCC members will have the opportunity to view and comment on the recommendations of these task groups via a survey that will be distributed to the PCC list.
Redesigned PCC Web Site
A redesigned and updated PCC web site was launched in early May 2012. The new web site has several pages dedicated to RDA and its implementation
in the PCC:
RDA Proposed Guidelines and Standards
RDA Interim Policies and Best Practices
If you find broken links or missed pages, please report them to the
PCC Secretariat.
Thanks, everyone,
