OK, I can't beat Dennis's analogy, but in general I would advise using WD40 on rusty bolts on the
kids' swing set or for sticky consumer-grade locks on outside doors and do not even bring it into
the room where audio equipment is kept and used. It really does work well for finicky locks (for
instance, the lock on my shed that has suffered 20 northeastern US winters), also for squeeky door
hinges (curing those always wins brownie points with the wife), but not for anything audio. For
things like motors, use light motor oil sold as "Zoom Spout Oil" at most US hardware stores. For
other things, use purified and specialized oils. Avoid "3-In-1" oil for anything audio also. Again,
best used on sticky bolts and the like, very effective there, not good for anything audio.
