BIBCO RDA Training and Implementation Survey—Summary

In August 2012, forty-seven BIBCO institutions completed a survey distributed by the PCC Secretariat about their plans for RDA implementation (a 90% return rate).  This summary includes the introductory material for the survey, a summary of the responses, and some recommendations.

Summary of the Questions and Responses

 

Question 1.  Asked for the name and email of the person responding, and the name of the institution.  (Names withheld, since no statement appeared in the survey about releasing names)

 

Question 2.  Asked about the extent to which staff would implement RDA.

 

Only a small number have not decided yet about RDA implementation.  Among the other responses, all indicated that some or all of their staff members would move toward RDA cataloging.

Comments (15): Described variations on their phased implementation plans, regarding acceptance and creation of AACR2 records, the creation of RDA records for textual monographs first and for special materials later.

 

Question 3.   Asked for the earliest estimated RDA descriptive cataloging implementation date.

 

While some BIBCO institutions are already contributing RDA records for at least some materials, and some will begin as early as October or November, the majority of institutions will implement RDA for BIBCO in late 2012 and early 2013.  The numbers predict that about 70% of BIBCO institutions will have begun RDA descriptive cataloging by PCC Day One for RDA NACO authorities, March 31, 2013.

 

Comments (15): Continued the theme of phased implementation by different segments of staff, or different parts of institutional collections.  Six libraries propose implementation dates from April to July 2013, dates beyond those offered as survey responses.

 

Question 4.  Asked which RDA training materials would be used.

 

Almost all will use the LC online descriptive cataloging modules, which have been endorsed by the PCC to serve as “bridge” RDA training for current BIBCO members.  Half will use locally produced materials, many adapted for local needs from available materials.

 

Comments (24): Listed various resources.  A few indicated that they would use PCC-prepared materials, if available.  One mentioned the list of recommended non-PCC RDA training materials that a task group of the Standing Committee on Training will post soon.  Libraries are using resources from ALCTS, OCLC, state and regional consortia, and RDA toolkit webinars and workflows.  One respondent will use an outside trainer, presumably for classroom instruction.  Another institution will minimize classroom training in favor of “real work” with discussion and Q and A.

 

Four respondents spoke of using the materials of other institutions, if they could be shared, or spoke of offering to share their resources with other institutions.  (Editorial comment: This sounds like cooperation…)

 

Question 5.  Asked about the methods for RDA training.

 

In a few cases, lead trainers would train others.  Half of the institutions will have all staff train simultaneously, and about a quarter will train staff in stages.

 

Comments (13): Enlarged on the possible options, with some institutions using an implementation team to set timetables for different groups of staff, and one institution waiting until after RDA NACO training to decide on a descriptive training pattern.  One group wants to use the method that has worked for them in past training events—watching RDA “bridge” webinars in a group.

 

Question 6.  Asked which special types of materials or topics should be covered by RDA training modules, with the option to select more than one.

Comments (15):  Showed that some libraries already are contributing RDA records in special areas, and one mentioned that staff members are participating in the development of training materials for the Law and Rare Book communities.  Several comments stated that having RDA training materials for special areas would open up possibilities for expanding BIBCO contributions for members presently working mostly in books. 

 

Recommendations:

  1. Coordinate news about the development of materials
  2. Identify topics currently under development
  3. Identify groups developing materials, especially those making early progress during RDA implementation
  4. Identify additional needs or topics of interest that emerge during RDA migration
  5. Identify PCC institutions that can partner with each other, sharing materials and/or mentoring
  6. Develop RDA BSR training (Online modules, quizzes, exercises)
  7. Recruit trainers and reviewers for RDA BSR training
  8. Identify location where materials will reside (PCC site/CLW site)
