Dear Martin and all,

a further alternative that hasn't been mentioned yet is the Mytek 8x192. I don't have direct experience with this unit but last year I had the opportunity to go through a careful series of blind listening tests and measurements comparing the A/D stages of a Metric Halo Mobile i/o ULN-2, Mytek STEREO 96 ADC, RME Fireface UC and Sound Devices SD USBPre transferring different kinds of materials from analogue tape @ 96 KHz and 24 bit. The conversion quality of Mytek and Sound Devices was the most convincing, whereas Metric Halo and RME, I liked the least. Note that this judgement is exclusively based on the evaluation of the A/D conversion stage (in the end it was the Mytek Stereo 96 ADC that we considered to have the best conversion of all four). On the other hand the Mytek 8x192 will have different converters as the 96 KHz / 2-channel version.

That said, I would also stress that conversion quality is not the only thing you ought to consider. In the real world there are always issues with driver stability, interfacing, compatibility, monitoring capabilities, budget... In my experience, when setting up a new system from scratch you will find out that there are many surprises and things that don't work as stated in the advertisement or even in the manuals. If you can, I would highly encourage you to test a few interfaces in real conditions before buying them to see which one fits your needs best.

Regards
Gregorio

The mic preamps are the best I currently own (better than the Sound Devices 722, at least with my DPA-4006 TL pair). It is also a field recorder, but use a stick USB interface and SDHC cards or a USB HDD but NOT a USB thumb drive. For the computer it has both USB and FW400 interfaces. You need the USB interface for upgrading firmware, but the FW seems to impose less demands on the host's CPU, so I use that for normal operation.
