Nope, actually it validates without that :)

That's about right, but to be precise, you'd need a paragraph or list.

<otherfindaid>

<p><ref role="bibrecord" href="3548943”>Link to bib record</ref></p>

</otherfindaid>

True.  So a more future-proof solution would be something like this?

<otherfindaid><ref role="bibrecord" href="3548943”/></otherfindaid>

Michelle,

Within EAD 2002, I would encode the reference to the MARC record within the <otherfindaid> element and use <extref>. But using <archref> would not be wrong.

Keep in mind that in the revised EAD the many mixed content linking elements available in EAD 2002 will be reduced to <ref> and <dao> (with <dao> further restricted to a child of <did>).  So do whatever works in your current implementation, but know that whatever semantics you think are necessary to distinguish a link pointing to something arbitrary from a link to a catalog record will need to shift from the element used to create the link to a local vocabulary on the xlink:role attribute or some similar mechanism.

Personally, with the exception of <dao>, I don't see much utility in using different linking elements for different types of links.

Wouldn't archref work?

Hello Collective Wisdom --

We have a collection which is (or will be) listed to the item level in the EAD finding aid.  For several reason, some (but not all) of these items will also get individual MARC records in the catalog.  Rather than repeat all the marc info, we want to have a very short description of each item in the finding aid and a link to the very detailed MARC record for that item.

What would be the appropriate EAD tag to use for these links?  Not dao, because these aren't links to archival objects.  I'm thinking extref but that seemed awfully generic.  Thoughts?
