Venezuela after Chavez The death of Venezuela's larger-than-life president, Hugo Chavez, creates a power vacuum that should set a cautionary example to any regime that relies on a would-be autocrat. Mr Chavez's dominance of public life and the steady concentration of power in the presidency under his rule have left the country bereft of capable administrators and robust institutions. My team of Latin America analysts and I looked closely at succession issues as Mr Chavez's health deteriorated. We believe that his chosen replacement—interim president Nicolas Maduro—should win the April 14th election. However, in the longer term the ruling elite will struggle to maintain its unity without Mr Chavez's charismatic presence.
