I had good luck dubbing a LaserDisc to DVD using an older consumer gadget
that has a big harddrive in it as well as a DVD burner.  You can tape off
TV or from another source (except DVD with Macrovision or DVD-R recorded on
another machine) to the harddrive. Then you edit from the HDD on screen and
then burn a DVD.  No HD tho.  I dubbed a Laserdisc of the original Showboat
movie, which to my knowledge has hever been issued on DVD, and apparently
there was no Macrovision or other copy protection on the LD.  This worked
really well.  But you cannot get a digital signal out of my LD player, only
standard video output.

For copying VHS tapes to DVD, I still use an old single unit Insignia that
is quirky but gets the job done.
