FEDLINK Orientation to Federal Libraries and Information Centers Series: The NOAA Central Library Wednesday, August 14, 2013 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. (Online Meeting Announcement<http://www.loc.gov/flicc/meeting_announcements/2013/ma201313.pdf>) The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Central Library provides critical information and research support to NOAA staff in Silver Spring, Maryland and in remote locations around the country. The library also provides reference services to the general public (via email, phone, chat, and in person) and access to its holdings through scanned publications and Interlibrary loan. The library has its roots in America's oldest science agencies--the Coast Survey formed in 1807, the U.S. Army Signal Corps, later the Weather Bureau, formed in 1870, and the U.S. Fish Commission formed in 1871. Today NOAA provides invaluable public services including severe weather forecasts, fisheries conservation, nautical charting, and maintenance of the nation's GPS, coral reef preservation, satellite operations, and much more. The tour will include information about the library's transition to RDA, its education and bibliometrics programs, institutional repository efforts and highlights of the Rare Books Collection. There will also be a brief walking tour of the library to see first-hand the current reconfiguration efforts.
