While I would not want to see "Snicket, Lemony.  Novels. Selections (Series of unfortunate events)" used as the preferred access point, I wonder if it would be a useful 400.  In other words, in a list of entries under the author’s name in a catalog, in the section where one has “Novels. Selections,” would you not want the reader also to be reminded of those collections that are entered under distinctive titles?

That would indeed be an unfortunate event.  But RDA 6.2.2.10 states, "if a compilation of works is known by a title that is used in resources embodying that compilation or in reference sources, apply the instructions at 6.2.2.4–6.2.2.5 [i.e., use the preferred title]. For other compilations, apply the instructions at 6.2.2.10.1–6.2.2.10.3, as applicable."

 

I would say "A series of unfortunate events" is rather unambiguously known by that title, both in the resources themselves, and in reference sources (e.g.: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Series_of_Unfortunate_Events), so there would be no need to look to the 6.2.2.10.3 alternative/PS.

Depends on what the cataloger thinks the books are known as, Amy.  The prevailing PCC interpretation seems to be that collections are not known by the titles they are published under...
