NLS Operations Alert

No. 13-61

DATE          :  October 21, 2013

TO                :  Network Libraries

FROM         :  John Brown, Acting Chief, Network Division

SUBJECT   :  Change in BARD statistical reports

With the release of the BARD Mobile application for iOS devices, the Braille and Audio Reading Download (BARD) statistical reports will be altered to accommodate the incremental download of audiobooks and the use of authorization objects (AOs), which allow patrons to play audiobooks and magazines on mobile devices. The change does not apply to the braille book download reports.

BARD Mobile users may download pieces of an audiobook as their device connects and disconnects with the Internet or mobile network. Once a book is completely downloaded using BARD Mobile the device will request an AO. When this happens, BARD will count the delivery of an AO as one circulation of the title.

The following rules will be used to generate statistics for BARD downloads:

a.         Braille downloads using BARD Mobile will be calculated the same as braille downloads using the Web.

b.         Audio downloads using BARD Mobile will be calculated independently from audio downloads using the Web. These circulations will be calculated as follows:

When a BARD Mobile user’s device requests an AO for a particular title BARD will count it as one (1) circulation for that month. Any additional AO requests for the same title from the same patron during the reporting period (first day of the month to the last day of the month) will not be counted as a circulation (0).

Additionally, the network library User Report will be revised to provide each library with information about the number of patrons using mobile devices. This new information will be reflected in items G and H, as in the attached sample.
