As a professional archivist with over 30 years of experience, I must defend the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame here.

Archival work has become increasingly specialized and technical in years. The paramount requirement for a Digital Access and Systems Librarian position is the technical expertise for this complex work. Knowledge of the music's history is definitely a plus, but it's much more important that the person have the core IT skills for such a technical position.

Hiring someone with broad knowledge of rock and roll history but lacking in the technical skills would be a disaster in this case. If they can find someone with expertise in both, great; if not, they must hire someone with the technical skills rather the historical knowledge.

For a reference archivist, it would be a different story.

Thanks for your response. I noticed that you list the knowledge of the subject of rock and roll as "preferred." It seems to me that it should be required. Also, I believe, that if you are going to require such detailed specification on library certification, you would expect the same when it comes to knowledge of the subject matter.

Karl

Hi Karl,

Under the "Job Requirements and Qualifications" heading, you'll see "Knowledge of the history of rock and roll and related music genres" listed.

Thanks,
Andy

Just curious…but don't you think you should make an addition to your qualifications…namely some understanding and/or appreciation of rock and roll as well as some general knowledge and background in music…

Karl
