It's a compilation of expressions, and following LC PPC PS 6.27.3, the proper structure is just as you indicate:

100 [AAP for creator], $e author.

--no 240----

70012 $i contains (expression):$a [AAP]

70012 $i contains (expression):$a [AAP]. $l [language of translation]

When in doubt, remember the "El cartero" example from the PS (though it would be nice if they'd update that with relational terminology).
