The University of Chicago Library invites applications for the position of Cataloger. 


The cataloger is responsible for creating original cataloging for all newly acquired continuing resources in all formats. The Library is an active contributor to the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC), contributing to the national efforts of CONSER, BIBCO, NACO, and SACO; therefore, all descriptive cataloging is performed in accordance with national standards.  The cataloger also performs the regular metadata maintenance associated with continuing resources, required not only to assure accurate, clear, and usable data, but to also promote access and discoverability. The cataloger should expect to work not only with current materials, but also materials that span the existing historical holdings of the Library’s collection.


The cataloger collaborates with other catalogers as well as Library staff outside of the Department in an effort to best inform local policies and procedures as they apply to continuing resources publications.  Assists in the ongoing guidance and instruction of all members of the Technical Services Department who regularly engage in the management and workflows of continuing resources.  Regularly collaborates on special projects with the section’s library assistants.  The cataloger also serves on library committees, participates in library-wide programs and activities, and is expected to be active professionally both locally and nationally. 


The role of the Continuing Resources section continues to evolve, requiring its members to be open-minded, flexible, and possess the willingness and ability to adapt to changing departmental, library, and technology needs.


The cataloger will be expected to possess the following skills:





·         graduate library degree from an ALA-accredited institution;

·         demonstrated experience working with continuing resources in all formats and with their associated bibliographic and authority data;

·         ability to meet local and national standards for quality;

·         demonstrated ability to perform complex problem solving and decision making, particularly that which is associated with and specific to continuing resources;

·         excellent reading knowledge of at least one non-English western European language;

·         demonstrated strong computer skills and the ability to adapt quickly to technological change;

·         ability to achieve and maintain a reasonable and consistent production level that meets departmental expectations;

·         ability to communicate effectively and constructively with staff at all levels;

·         ability to collaborate with colleagues, with supervisors, and with other library staff.



·         excellent reading knowledge of German;

·         previous cataloging experience in an academic/research library;

·         experience with and knowledge of holdings formats;

·         ability to transliterate the various Cyrillic scripts into their Romanized form;

·         experience contributing to the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (BIBCO, CONSER, NACO, SACO);

·         experience applying non-MARC metadata standards (e.g., Dublin Core, MODS, METS);

·         familiarity with emerging library linked data standards and applications (e.g., RDF, BIBFRAME).


SALARY AND BENEFITS: Appointment salary based on qualifications and experience. Benefits include retirement plan, insurance, and paid time off. There is a tuition benefit plan for college age and younger children.
