The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) has been working on some issues of greater relevance to the field of library science, and webcasts of several recent events are now available.
This spring, IMLS hosted a series of three strategic priority meetings, each focused on a different area: National Digital Platform, Learning Spaces in Libraries, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Learning in Libraries. The sessions will help inform future strategies, particularly for the agency’s National Leadership Grant program. The archive of convening videos (available for three months) and agendas are online: http://www.imls.gov/news/imls_focus.aspx. A blog post on the National Digital Platform convening is also available: http://blog.imls.gov/?p=4886.
On April 17, IMLS also convened its first public hearing around the E-rate modernization, an important source of telecommunications discounts for libraries and schools. IMLS released an analysis of FCC data prior to the hearing, which shows that 90 percent of public libraries (a total of 15,551 individual libraries), have used discounts provided by the E-rate. A blog post with links to the hearing video/transcript and FCC data analysis is available: http://blog.imls.gov/?p=4826.
Next week, IMLS is headed to the ALA Annual Conference in Las Vegas, where many IMLS-funded projects will be showcased. Additionally, it will be Director Susan Hildreth’s last ALA Annual, as her appointed term soon expires. She’ll be available at booth #1534 on Friday evening (June 27, 5:30-7pm) for anyone who would like to say hello. The IMLS Update session will be Sunday, June 29, from 8:30-10am, at N243 in the Convention Center. A list of other IMLS sessions at ALA Annual is available here: http://www.imls.gov/imls_at_the_american_library_association_conference_in_las_vegas.aspx.
