Innovative Talent Management Practices in Federal Libraries: Responding to the Challenges of Recruitment, Retention, and Succession

Federal libraries are facing issues surrounding recruiting and retaining staff, and planning for continuity.  Join Roberta Shaffer - Library of Congress, Mary-Deirdre Coraggio and Rosa Liu - NIST, and Kathleen Hanselmann - Defense Language Institute panelists to hear how they are managing talent in their libraries.

Leveraging Librarian Expertise in Customer Resource Management

Madison Bolls, Public Access and Internet Reference Librarian, will describe how the EPA Library Network implemented a customer resource management system that ensures inquiries/comments are effectively routed, managed, tracked, answered and measured.

The FAFLRT Awards

The Cicely Phippen Marks Scholarship is given to a library school student who has an interest in working in a federal library.  The scholarship is for $1,500 and is sponsored by Mr. Charles Garris, husband of the late Cicely Phippen Marks.  The Federal Librarians Cicely Phippen Marks Scholarship recipient for 2014 is Sue E. Graves.  Ms. Graves is currently attending San Jose State University and works as a Metadata Technician at the Smithsonian Libraries.

 

The FAFLRT Rising Star Award recognizes the activities and contributions of those new to federal or armed forces librarianship and government information management, and who display a passion for the profession, both at work and via volunteer or association activities.  The FAFLRT Rising Star recipient for 2014 is Katie Rapp.  Ms. Rapp is currently at the NIST (National Institute for Standards and Technology) Library.  Ms. Rapp was also the recipient of the Federal Librarians Cicely Phippen Marks Scholarship in 2012.

 

The FAFLRT Achievement Award recognizes an individual for achievement in the promotion of library and information service and the information profession in the federal community.  The FAFLRT Achievement Award recipient for 2014 is Judith Proctor Cannan. Ms. Cannan is currently Chief, Cooperative and Instructional Programs Division at the Library of Congress.

 

The FAFLRT Distinguished Service Award recognizes a FAFLRT member for outstanding and sustained contributions to FAFLRT.  The Distinguished Service Award recipient for 2014 is Eileen Welch.  Ms. Welch is currently the Information Resource Manager at the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.
