Hi Shannon,
My background is in recorded sound, and though we do not have large sound collections at the Newberry, they are definitely a concern.
I worked from 2002-2006 at the Southern Folklife Collection at UNC-Chapel Hill, where I was Assistant Archivist and involved in the transfer of sound recordings for public access. The transfers were primarily open reel tapes, LPs and 78s, but I handled and processed collections with almost every existing type of recorded sound format, including cylinders, wire recordings, acetate discs, DATs, etc.

At the Newberry, I've been able to apply that knowledge in identifying, cleaning, and rehousing materials in our collections. And currently we are working through a number of issues as we continue to digitize our materials and streamline access procedures.

Let me know if you'd like to talk more about my experience. It's been a few years since I've been involved with MAC, but my membership is up to date and I'd love to take part in something like this. It often seems as though audio materials get pushed aside due to fear and lack of knowledge..it would be great to offer folks some reassurance and guidance in this area!

Sincerely,
........................
