DATE : August 1, 2014
TO : Network Libraries

SUBJECT : 2015 dates for NLS three-day orientation and machine-repair workshop
Network library staff may now register for one of three 2015 orientation programs. The three-day events, held in Washington, D.C., provide a comprehensive overview of NLS procedures and policies and give participants the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of NLS operations and services, interact with NLS staff, and work with colleagues from around the network. NLS also offers an equipment inspection/repair workshop following each orientation session.
The 2015 orientation schedule is:
· March 10–12, Tuesday–Thursday (plus Friday, March 13, for the equipment inspection/repair workshop)
· June 16–18, Tuesday–Thursday (plus Friday, June 19, for the equipment inspection/repair workshop)
· October 20–22, Tuesday–Thursday (plus Friday, October 23, for the equipment inspection/repair workshop)
Representatives from each of the NLS division offices and sections will brief participants on NLS functions and answer questions. Each registrant may choose two one-hour Experience NLS sessions on topics such as accessing the Braille and Audio Reading Download (BARD) web site, BARD administration, book selection for the national collection, and the Comprehensive Mailing List System (CMLS). Participants will also take a professional tour of the Library of Congress buildings on Capitol Hill.
A sample agenda is available at www.loc.gov/nls/nlm/4_6_OrientationSchedule.html. Participants are expected to attend the entire program.
The 2011 Revised Standards and Guidelines of Service (Standard 11.10), published by the American Library Association, endorses sending appropriate staff members who have completed at least six months on the job to an NLS orientation.
To register, please contact Pamela N. Davenport at (202) 707-8296 or [log in to unmask] no later than eight weeks before the session you wish to attend. One month prior to the selected orientation session, registered participants will receive a confirmation letter, agenda, list of accommodations, and Experience NLS questionnaire. Staff requiring accommodations for physical or visual disabilities should indicate such a preference upon registration to ensure that materials are provided in an appropriate format (audio, braille, large print, or electronic format).
