What all these critics seem to miss is the Mahleer prenets his discourse by using the musical equivilent of "but," the harmonic resolution delayed over the barline by a long appgiatura, keeping the music at a continual tension, at least to these ears. The finale of the Third Symphony is a clear example but it is a rhetorical technique he used throughout his mature works.
