NLS Operations Alert

No. 14-69

DATE : October 1, 2014
TO : Network Libraries
FROM : Stephen Prine, Assistant Chief, Network Division
SUBJECT : Patron Information Machine Management System (PIMMS) implementation

On October 16, 2014, NLS and Data Management will deploy the Patron Information Machine Management System (PIMMS) as the system of record for patrons' names and addresses, demographic information, and the Blind and Physically Handicapped Inventory Control System (BPHICS) information reported by network libraries and machine-lending agencies (MLAs). This deployment has been pushed back from October 1, 2014, to provide for additional beta testing and validation with certain pilot libraries.

During October and through the end of the calendar year Data Management will be transitioning network libraries using the Reader Enrollment and Delivery System (READS) to Web-READS to enable libraries using READS to access and use PIMMS.

The Keystone Library Automation Systems (KLAS) vendor will begin testing its systems for PIMMS compatibility in October and upon successful conclusion of that testing, will begin the transition to PIMMS on a schedule to be determined by KLAS and the libraries involved. The Consortium of User Libraries (CUL) also will begin testing its systems during the fourth quarter of 2015, and the Texas regional library has submitted its migration timeline to NLS.

In the interim all network libraries will continue to provide Comprehensive Mailing List System (CMLS) transactions on a weekly basis until their individual library has transitioned to PIMMS. MLAs will continue to submit BPHICS reports on a monthly basis until their MLA has transitioned to PIMMS.

WebNet will continue to be available to all libraries for all functions-including "XESS," the "Library Publications Order Form," and "Requesting a Currency Reader"-until all libraries have transitioned to PIMMS. Once that occurs a successor to WebNet will be available to PIMMS libraries.
