NLS Operations Alert

No. 14-68

DATE          :    October 1, 2014

TO                :    Network Libraries

FROM         :    Meredith Beckhardt, Head, Reference Section

SUBJECT   :    Login IDs and passwords for new Network Library Database

The NLS Network Library Database (NLDB), which gathers and maintains information about the network, has been upgraded. The new interface will make it easier for libraries to provide the information and statistics that NLS delivers to their peers in the network, congressional staff, and the general public. It also offers a sturdier programming environment and brings NLS into compliance with new government-wide security standards.

All Library of Congress systems now require that each user have a separate login ID and password. Therefore, the common practice of sharing one login ID and password for one library is no longer permissible. As a result, when the new NLDB goes live on October 1, 2014, each network librarian will receive an e-mail with a new NLDB login ID and a temporary password. When the e-mail is received, access the NLDB on the Network Library Services website and select the link for Network Library Database. Log in with the new ID and enter the temporary password. The system then will prompt the user to create a permanent password.

Once that task is completed, NLS requests that each network librarian send an e-mail to Meredith Beckhardt at [log in to unmask] with a list of any library staff members who need access to the NLDB. Please provide the following information in the message:

·         library CMLS ID

·         staff person’s name and individual agency e-mail address

·         indicate need to enable the accessibility options for visual impairment, if necessary

A unique login ID and password will then be e-mailed directly to each staff member for the individual’s sole use.

A separate operations alert will be issued soon about when to enter the FY14 full-year readership and circulation statistics.

Thank you for your cooperation.
