The University of Michigan School of Information offers several opportunities to receive free assistance with your information management needs during the 2015 winter semester, January - April. Project lengths can range from one day to an entire term.

UMSI Service Day

Participation is open to any non-profit organization local to Ann Arbor. Propose a volunteer project for the UMSI community to assist with on our annual day of Service, January 17, 2015.  We are seeking both general volunteer projects (sorting, painting, cleaning, etc.) and information-related volunteer opportunities.  Contact [log in to unmask] for more information by December 12, 2014

Alternative Spring Break

Let UMSI students amplify the work you do through our annual service program. Students will work on targeted information projects during the week of Spring Break (March 2 - 6, 2015). Projects can focus on web, data, information systems, collections, social media, health and more! Organizations are matched with students for a 40-hour service-engagement experience. SI 501: Contextual Inquiry and Project Management

Have an information flow process analyzed and receive recommendations for improvement. A team of UMSI masters students will perform a thorough analysis of your organization’s information-flow process from several perspectives and provide a report suggesting ways to make these processes more effective and efficient. SI 529: Online Communities

Does your organization have an online community that could use improvement? Would you like to establish an online community as a way to engage with your constituents? An online community can be any interactive group held together by a common identity. The forum for engagement varies, from social media, to forums, to group listservs. As a client, you will be matched with UMSI students who will study your organization and provide you with a recommendation report on your existing community or guidelines for developing one. SI 622: Needs Assessment and Usability Evaluation

Have a free user study and usability analysis done of your website, software, or application. A team of students will conduct a series of evaluations and other analyses, generating reports and recommendations regarding your interactive system. Learn more at Deadline to apply: December 24, 2014

SI 631: Content Management Systems

Does your organization need a new, interactive website?  In this course, student teams build Drupal websites for clients. Students are advanced practitioners and will apply knowledge of information architecture and usability methods to provide clients with a well-designed and usable site.
