So, yes you can use start without end. (In the above example you would supply “1” as value for number.)

Is there a standard convention for encoding single-page items using the MODS <part> structure? For example:
part[@unit="page"]/start = 100
--OR--
part/detail[@type="page"]/number = 100
Should <start> only be used with <end>, or can it be used alone to indicate a single-page item?
