The following example is shown at

www.loc.gov/standards/mods/userguide/part.html#start

<part>

<detail type="page number">

<number>3</number>

</detail>
<extent unit="pages">

<start>3</start>

</extent>

</part>

So, yes you can use start without end.  (In the above example you would supply “1” as value for number.)

Subject: [MODS] Encoding page number for single-page items

Is there a standard convention for encoding single-page items using the MODS <part> structure? For example:

part[@unit="page"]/start = 100

--OR--

part/detail[@type="page"]/number = 100

Should <start> only be used with <end>, or can it be used alone to indicate a single-page item?

Thanks,
Tim
