Dear all,

I have a question/remark about the MARCXML to MODS 3.5 XSLT transformations on http://www.loc.gov/standards/mods/mods-conversions.html, the stylesheets our own transformations are based on.

For material type Continuing Resources, mods:frequency is based on MARC 008/18. In the MARCXML to MODS-stylesheets (XSLT 1.0, 2.0, MODS 3.5, 3.4), the following transformation is made: <xsl:when test="$controlField008-18='#'">Completely irregular</xsl:when>.
But according to the introduction on MARC 21 Bibliographic, "# - The graphic symbol # is used for a blank in coded fields and in other special situations where the existence of the character blank might be ambiguous. (In most textual examples, the blank is represented in the conventional way, by the absence of a character.)" (http://www.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/bdintro.html).

So in my opinion the transformation in XSLT should be <xsl:when test="$controlField008-18=' '">Completely irregular</xsl:when>.

If anyone would like to test/confirm this as well, we would really appreciate it!

With kind regards
Inge
