Hi, Wendy. I believe the worst losses of private collections are probably
undocumented. The dumpster is the natural enemy of private collections.
When collectors die without arranging for disposition of their collections,
the task of cleaning out their living spaces falls to those (relatives,
court-appointed personnel or others) who view the collection as just a lot
of old junk to be got rid of as fast as possible. I have seen it happen
many times, and those who would be interested in salvaging the collection
never even learn about what happened until way too late.

It's a serious issue that needs discussion and as much
consciousness-raising as possible.

Best,
John Haley
