The division's general collections include music manuscripts and printed music, books on music and musicians, literary manuscripts, periodicals, microforms, iconography, and more. Researchers will discover particular collection strengths in American music and music-related materials (largely guided by the copyright deposit system); however, the richness of the collections also extends to the European art music tradition and includes strengths in opera scores and librettos, chamber music, first editions of major composers' works, early printed music, and theoretical treatises. The Music Division's archival collections document the creative process of luminaries from the worlds of music, theater, and dance, including composers, performers, publishers, dancers and choreographers, theatrical producers and designers, and others. The Recorded Sound Research Center provides access to the commercial and archival audio holdings of the Library of Congress. This is the nation's largest public collection of sound recordings, containing over three million recordings, and includes music, spoken word and radio broadcasts. Over 120 years of sound recording history is represented in nearly every audio format, from cylinders to CD's, and covers a wide range of subjects and genres with particular strength in opera, chamber music, folk, jazz, musical theater, popular and classical recordings. The collection also contains recordings of over 500,000 radio broadcasts. Some of the special collections include the NBC Radio Collection and NBC Radio History Files, the Archive of Recorded Poetry and Literature, the Coolidge Auditorium Concert Series, the Tony Schwartz Collection, the Meet the Press Collection, the Aaron Copland Collection, the Charles Mingus Collection and the Copyright Deposit Collection. The tour of the Performing Arts Reading Room (home to the Music Division, room LM-113) will offer a brief history of the Music Division that outlines the types of materials they hold, how they came to hold them, and the kind of research that their collections support. The talk will be accompanied by an in-person look at a selection of rare collection items, a demonstration of online resources, and a description of the Library's chamber music concert series, now in its 90th season. The tour of the Recorded Sound Research Center will include a brief discussion of their policies and procedures, provide several strategies for searching the collection and, as time permits, take questions about individual interests and projects. The April 8th and April 15th tours will include tours of both the Performing Arts Reading Room and Recorded Sound Research Center.
