I will throw Pennsylvania's hat into this ring.  I have two writing deadlines that wouldn't make me much use right now (other than editing/proofing/having a go at a first draft), but I offer myself up as a panelist if that would be helpful?

Best,

Glad you mentioned being on the local program committee, Alayne.  I was on the local committee when AWP was in Boston a couple of years ago.  I think that we have John Cole to thank since when AWP was in DC, he was a good sponsor of activities.

So .. anyone willing to take on writin a proposal?  Also note that travel would have to be covered by the panelists.  AWP doesn't cover travel.  So we would want to find West Coast authors or writers we know go to AWP.

We presented a panel on Awards programs this year when AWP was in Minneapolis, and I was also one of the local committee choosing panels. There are usually a lot of panel proposals about how writers can get out into the community, but I think that a panel that had a couple representatives from CfBs housed in different locations – perhaps one a State Library, one a Humanities Center, or at a University, plus an author or two – would be a great chance to highlight the Center for the Book and the opportunities for writers. State by State: Connecting Writers and Readers through the Center for the Book – or something like that.

I have a big grant due at the end of the week, so I can’t commit to writing a proposal, but I could make time to look over a draft, given that I’ve recently read a whole bunch of them!

I'm in to help in any way.  What would we offer the mostly authors, students and profs who attend these huge gatherings that would draw significant attention?  Having the right famous author or two on the panel would be great.  Something like "Connecting Local Writers and Readers" or "Celebrating the Young Writer"?

Thanks, Josephine

Late in the game, I know, but I wonder if we should get up a panel on state centers for the book as reading promotion partners ?

Anyone able to travel to CA in spring 2016?  Three people and a moderator ideal ... if we get three state CfBs to say yes, maybe we can get a high profile author who has worked with a state cfb to moderate ...

I can't take the lead on writing/submitting a proposal but I would be able to participate ... and would be glad to scout up an author from Mass who goes to AWP if we don't find a West coast voice ...

Dear Sharon,

The 2016 AWP Conference & Bookfair Los Angeles Subcommittee is currently accepting proposals for conference events. The conference will be held from March 30 through April 2, 2016 at the Los Angeles Convention Center and JW Marriott Los Angeles. The deadline for submissions is Friday, May 1, 2015 11:59 p.m. EST.

The 2015 conference in Minneapolis hosted over 550 events and drew over 12,000 attendees, 2,000 presenters, and 800 bookfair exhibitors for four days of essential literary discussions, readings, and fun. We hope to see you at North America’s largest literary conference next year.

What kinds of proposals is AWP looking for?
The highest-ranked proposals often involve panelists with diverse backgrounds, aesthetics, specialties, affiliations, and who are of different races or in different stages of their careers. The subcommittee understands that such events will enable the best discussions; an event that demonstrates interscholastic play, inter-generational collaboration, and diversity will appeal to a broad audience and provide lively analysis of an issue.

If you feel that a particular subject is underrepresented, please submit a proposal this year. Chances are others feel the same way! The subcommittee prefers proposals that reach beyond one campus or group to a greater diversity of people who share your concerns.

Successful proposals also observe the guidelines and modules by which the Los Angeles Subcommittee receives and reviews proposals. Before you prepare your proposal, please read the Open Letter and Event Proposal Handbook carefully.

Good luck with your #AWP16 proposal!

Best regards,
AWP Conference Staff
