Well, of course, but in practice, at least here at NYPL, where we're processing digital files from individual creators in every format from 7-inch floppies to full hard drives, it's very unusual, in fact pretty much unheard of, for people to create checksums for their born-digital records before we acquire them. We simply create MD5 and SHA1 upon ingest.
