At our meeting, I mentioned a document that Cathy sent out to us that includes insights into judges’ assessment of letters. I’ve attached it here. It helped Iowa judges immensely.
On February 26, 2015 Cathy wrote to us:
“As you all know, our entry guidelines lists three criteria on which we assess the children's letters: content, writer's voice, and grammar. However, assessing these often heartfelt letters in a totally objective way is challenging indeed! Last week, Anne Ledford in DC asked for insight in how our judges assessed the letters and I was happy to share with her the attached assessment checklist. See "What do I mean by . . .?" (attached). This checklist helps us here to explain to ourselves why we are eliminating letters just to keep us on track with one another and ensure that we stay on focus as best we can. Anne thought the checklist was very helpful and so I'm sharing it all of you as well.”
I look forward to getting Cathy’s Anchor Letters to help our judges next year.
