I'm excited to announce a Newspaper Software Developer's Meeting this July in Eugene, Oregon! Registration is required: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/newspaper-viewer-software-development-tickets-17266219728 This event is a developers meeting to create a roadmap for a state-based version of the LC Newspaper Viewer software. The Library of Congress has made the LC Newspaper Viewer software (aka chronam) available open source, and it has successfully been used to host successful statewide projects, including Oregon, North Carolina, and Nebraska. Currently, each state is maintaining their own fork and often repeating the work of other states. By creating a development plan around a state-based branch of the LC Newspaper Viewer software, we intend to leverage the great work begun by the Library of Congress and adapt for a larger audience, increasing the sustainability of state newspaper digitization programs. Outcomes: ****** State-based fork for chronam available in Github.com ****** Community-managed group and participants for state-based fork ****** Feature-set agreement and development plan including timeline (e.g. county browse, OCR editing, collaborator attribution tags) ****** Road map for compatibility with communities of practice (IIIF and DPLA) ****** Plan and timeline for Amazon Machine Image for state-based projects who cannot host locally Participants: Participants must have experience previously installed the chronam software and participate as either a technical project manager or a programmer. Costs: This event is free. Participants will be reimbursed for travel: lodging up to $99 + tax, meals (per diem), and airfare (U.S. carrier only). Acknowledgements: This event is possible thanks to the National Endowment for the Humanities' National Digital Newspaper Program and Library of Congress. Please let me know if you have any questions.
