I performed with an erhu player named Xiaodong Wei for a few years, and I
can assure you that the instrument has two strings, not one. In fact, the
name 'erhu' literally means 'two strings' in Chinese. The bow is placed in
between the strings, allowing for pressure inward toward one string, or
outward toward the other. With no fingerboard as a guide, it's quite
amazing what can be accomplished on the open strings. Xiaodong used to play
Csardas regularly, as seen on these videos
