The Nimitz Library, United States Naval Academy has a cataloging position
open to federal employees.  *Applications must be received by November 10,

THE POSITION:   U.S. Naval Academy is seeking an innovative, user-centered
and detail-oriented Cataloging Librarian to contribute to the ongoing
development of Nimitz Library as an exemplary 21st-century academic library=
.
  The range of responsibilities for this position includes original,
descriptive and subject cataloging for materials in a variety of formats;
working on authority data, such as vendor-supplied records; and assisting
with quality control of the library's discovery tool.   This Librarian will
also help plan and prepare for a next generation catalog system and assists
with technical training for staff.  In addition, the Cataloging librarian
has regular shifts at the reference desk, providing research assistance in
person, by phone and virtually to midshipmen, faculty and other library
users.  The incumbent in this General Schedule (GS grade 9/GS grade 11)
position reports to and works closely with the Head of the Cataloging
Department in a collaborative environment.


REQUIREMENTS:  *Current permanent Federal employee, former employee with
reinstatement eligibility, or veteran VEOA eligibility* ( see application
procedures link for more information),  U.S. citizenship; an appropriate
degree; successful relevant experience in an academic library;
comprehensive knowledge and ability to interpret cataloging/metadata and
standards, including but not limited to: AACR2, RDA, LC Classification
Schedules, subject headings and authority rules; familiarity with BIBFRAME
and linked data and how these emerging standards will affect  MARC based
library systems.  Knowledge  of current practices, trends, and innovations
in reference and/or digital library development; knowledge of technology
trends and developments as they affect and create opportunities for
improving access to information.  HIGHLY DESIRABLE:  proven ability to
respond to changing needs and circumstances; a record of professional
development.



THE LIBRARY:  Nimitz Library (http://www.usna.edu/Library/
<http://www.usna.edu/Library/%20> )has a dedicated staff of 18 librarians,
14 library technicians, and 1.2 FTE part-time student aides.  The print
collection of approximately 600,000 books and bound periodical volumes is
complemented by a government documents collection by virtue of the
library's depository status, extensive microform collections, e-book
collections, an extensive array of online databases, and rich collections
in the Special Collections and Archives Department.


THE U.S. NAVAL ACADEMY:  The Naval Academy, founded in 1845, is the Navy's
undergraduate college, with 4,300 students, approximately 500 military and
civilian faculty, and 25 major fields of study in three academic divisions
(9 in engineering, 10 in math and science, 6 in humanities and social
sciences).
