Speaking of SP-15's unobtainium chips. If anyone has dead Sp-15's, I want
them! We have designed a replacement chip for these tables and I need a
couple for testing. I am interested in them in any condition, even just
piles of parts!

Technics 1520 reel deck

What a coincidence! I just brought a pair of mine to "Music Technology" in
Springfield, VA Christmas Eve. Tim, their tape recorder technician, knows
these models intimately. I'm getting a complete overhaul including the
palyback caps replaced (I don't use them for recording any longer) as well
as the usual adjustments. I assume he'll get a good look at the brakes,
motors and bearings. I also asked he adjust the turntables to the same
height, etc. Cost c. $ 600 per machine. Turnaround is 3-4 weeks. See their
website, talk to Tim first. He doesn't accept calls but does call back.
Dunno if mentioning my name will help. No. is 703-764-7005.

They know enough not to take in Technics SP-15s if they need the unobtainium
chip.

They also do big mixing boards, electronic guitars, etc. Tubes and
transistors- Rate is $ 120 per hour. Their staff of about half-a-dozen guys
and lots of years in business augers well. But this is my first experience
with them.

Subject: [ARSCLIST] seeking excellent, reputable technician to restore a
Technics 1520 reel deck

I am wondering if any ARSC Listers have had a very good experience with a
Technics restoration tech.
I need one of my 1520 decks completely checked over and fixed back to
factory spec, mechanics and electronics. I'll send the headblock out to John
French. I need someone reliable and expert, preferably in the greater metro
NYC area. These decks are complex and somewhat finicky to get back to
factory spec. This one was ill-adjusted by someone. Its mechanics are worn
but functional, but the electronics are definitely out of whack. I'd want to
tensions and brakes especially looked after, they seem wrong.

Also, does anyone know a good source for refurb'ing Technics pinchrollers?

Thanks in advance for useful tips/references.

Just to be clear, I'm not seeking some kind of "audiophile" modifications or
"re-skinning"
cosmetics -- I want someone factory-trained to work on these things to
restore this to original working condition.
