Hi Everyone -

Please join us for the next in our regular monthly series of free Department of the Library Park Ranger Speaker Series lectures, entitled "The Frederick Douglass National Historic Site" on Tuesday, February 16th from 1:00 - 1:45 pm in Stewart Lee Udall Department of the Interior Building's Rachel Carson Room.

Born into slavery in 1818, Frederick Douglass escaped as a young man and became one of the most prominent voices in the abolitionist movement. He was well known internationally for his dazzling oratory and incisive antislavery writings. He stood as a living counter-example to slaveholders' arguments that slaves lacked the intellectual capacity to function as independent American citizens. In 1877, Douglass purchased an estate in Anacostia, which he named Cedar Hill. There he led a very active life, continuing to give speeches and publish writings. Douglass was a presidential appointee, serving as U.S. Marshal, Recorder of Deeds, and Minister Resident and Consul General to Haiti. He was also a grandfather who enjoyed spending leisure time with his grandchildren.

Please join Park Ranger Nate Johnson for a look at Frederick Douglass and his lifelong fight for equality and justice. The lecture will focus on Douglass's years at Cedar Hill, which is preserved as part of the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site.

All that are interested are invited.  The Rachel Carson Room is located in the basement level of the Stewart Lee Udall Department of the Interior Building, towards the back of and adjacent to the Interior Department cafeteria.  The Stewart Lee Udall Department of the Interior Building is located at 1849 C Street, NW in Washington.  Space for the program is limited so please go to the following link to register:
