Serials Cataloging/Metadata Librarian

Position Announcement

Texas A&M University Libraries seeks a creative and dynamic professional to join the Texas A&M University Libraries as the Serials Cataloging/Metadata Librarian. This is a tenure-track academic appointment carrying full faculty status and responsibilities including research, publication and service to meet both the Libraries’ and the University’s requirements for tenure and promotion.

Reporting through the Director of Metadata and Cataloging the Serials Cataloging/Metadata Librarian is responsible for performing original and complex copy cataloging, as well as the enhancement of records for serials in all formats, primarily electronic, according to established national guidelines and standards. The Librarian will participate in the planning and review of non-MARC metadata for various digital collections in the Libraries’ repository and future digital asset management system. The Librarian will also participate with other cataloging faculty in developing policies and procedures in accordance with national standards and best practices. The Librarian may assist in the cataloging of databases and websites and in resolving post-cataloging problems, conflicts in bibliographic records, and upgrading existing data. The Librarian may contribute and modify name, subject and series authority records through the NACO and SACO branches of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging. The Librarian may also participate in teams involving other units relating to the preparation of collections for remote storage facilities.

The person in this position must be a self-starter, detail-oriented and enjoy solving problems in a collaborative, collegial environment with continually evolving technologies. The Librarian is expected to maintain knowledge of national trends and developments in cataloging and metadata standards, understanding how they impact all areas of the library integrated library system and the ability of users to discover and access content.

The Libraries:

The Libraries currently rank 8th in materials expenditures ($23.6 million) and 4th in ongoing expenditures ($16.6 million) among all ARL libraries. Additionally, the Libraries typically rank near the top 10 for starting librarian salaries among ARL U.S. Public Academic Libraries. Currently the staffing includes 269 individuals which includes 91 librarians holding faculty status.

Salary/Benefits/Rank:
Faculty rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications and experience; minimum starting salary will be $50,500. Excellent benefits include health plan and paid life insurance; several retirement plans including TIAA-CREF; paid holidays and vacation; no state or local income tax. Funding is available for professional travel and development activities.
