The SHM H1775-H1800 for various kinds of literature do instruct us to use 650s to bring out the form/genre for collections of literature. The authority record for "Wit and humor" gives a range of classes that includes both works about humor (PN6147) and collections of humor (PN6231).

I assume we'll continue to use the 650 in collections until the SHM is revised, but 655s can be used as well, even if they are redundant.

I should clarify: I've seen them on bib records as 650s. (Most of them were cataloged long before the 655 field existed)

Terms from LCGFT do not have a monopoly on the use of 655 in MARC bibliographic records. Any appropriate genre/form term from any thesaurus in the general thesaurus list at http://www.loc.gov/standards/sourcelist/subject-category.html (of which LCSH is one) or the list of genre form thesauri at http://www.loc.gov/standards/sourcelist/genre-form.html may be used as long the use complies with the rules of the thesaurus.

As I've been adding lcgft headings to the catalog, I've started to look at subject headings that look like genre headings. One that came up recently was "American wit and humor" What is the scope of that heading (and other similar headings, including "Wit and humor, Pictorial")? I've seen it on Peanuts collections and books by stand-up comedians. Is this correct, or is just for the study of comedy?
