The New England Archivists Spring 2016 Meeting Program Committee had a long
list of random and unusual traits needed for a good plenary speaker.
Fortunately, Caleb Neelon checked off all the boxes... in spray paint.
Graffiti artist and historian? Check. Owns a French bulldog named
Ferdinand? Check. Designed a pair of Chuck Taylor sneakers for Converse?
Check. Taught us that Jordan Knight from New Kids on the Block used to do
graffiti under the name 'Popeye'? Check. Neelon’s experience in documenting
movements in which the most authoritative sources lay in personal or public
spaces, not institutional ones, is a fitting complement to our meeting’s
emphasis on innovation and breaks with tradition.
