I agree with Bob and will probably cease using 375 unless an individual very specifically self-identifies.

Because “male” and “female” seem to describe the situation they describe quite clearly. I’m not saying that other terms aren’t needed, but those two seem completely clear and so why change them?

By the way, I don’t think it’s correct to say that RDA made the terms or the practice of recording “male” and “female” “obsolete”. The RSC simply decided to decline to provide controlled terms for gender in RDA. RDA neither opposes nor endorses “male” and “female.” There’s no reason under the sun that PCC couldn’t declare that we should continue to use “male” and “female” where appropriate and either provide other vocabulary for other situations or direct catalogers to appropriate controlled vocabularies. In my opinion that’s the simplest solution.

Because “male” and “female” and “not known” are the choices in the handy OCLC basic name authority creation macro?

I don’t know why libraries would continue to follow a now obsolete RDA practice.
