have included other instrumental tracks including four by Lou Chiha

I used a little science to get around the rumble issue with these vertical
cut Edison Diamond Disc records. I use a very special vintage tonearm made
by Pickering - the 190D. The arm has no vertical travel aside from a very
light assembly holding the cartridge. Because of enertia, when the record is
played at a low speed, the small assembly can move up and down with the
irregularities, reducing the rumble. However, the bass frequencies were
reduced due to the extremely low mass of the cartridge assembly. The
solution was adding some mass to the assembly, which, because of enertia,
the added mass serves to stabilize the cartridge, and extract the lower
frequencies. I started this project about 30 years ago, and had recorded
about 20 of my Edison Diamond Disc records and passed them on to other
collectors, so for those I had to rely on my original transfers. The rest
are fresh transfers from records still in my collection. The resulting
warmth and depth of sound is really amazing.

I want to start my background of the Edison Phonograph Company with an
explanation of the technical challenges in transferring these early hill and
dale records. Dr. Jonas Aylsworth was a chemist at Edison and developed a
plastic material using phenol and formaldehyde, mixed with a sawdust filler.
When these records were new and had not been exposed to air, they were
totally flat and would play quietly. With sustained exposure to air, the
organic filler would absorb moisture and swell, resulting in the
characteristic rumble associated with these records. By slowing the transfer
speed and adapting a very special tone arm, I found an organic way to reduce
rumble and allow greater depth of fidelity while minimizing the rumble. Each
record played this way took 22 minutes to transfer.
I have catagorized my collections by dance bands, vocalists, military bands
and Opera, all recorded in separate sets. The first artist in this album is
by Jaudas' Society Orchestra - Edison's studio orchestra starting in 1900,
who accompanied many of the vocalists in the vocal set. Eugene Jaudas was
born in 1869 and had training as a violinist. Some of the very ealrist
records to incude the word "Jass" of course the spelloing changed to 'Jazz"
I have included four tracks by Lou Chiha "Friscoe" in this compilation. An
early soloist on both xylophone and vibrophone, his performance was used in
Edison's early tone tests - where he played in fornt of a curtain, then quit
playing, when the curtain was opened revealing an Edison Phonograph playiong
the same music to the astonishment of the audience. Pietro Frosini, born
1885- was playing the accordion at the age of six, and his records were very
popular. To this date, there is a Swedish based "Frosini Society"

The Louisiana Five first recorded Yelping Hound Blues as a 12"Emerson. This
Edison was recorded soon after, and because of the longer playing time, it
fit on a 10" record. Clarinetist Alcide Nunez was born in 1884, playing
first the guitar, then switching to clarinet by 1902. Pee Wee Russell
claimed that Nunez was the best jazz clarinetist in the world. By 1905, he
was playing with Papa Jack Laine's band but in 1916 left for Chicago with
Stein's Dixie Jass Band, later to be renamed the Original Dixieland Jazz
Band. Before their first recording, he left to join Tom Brown's band until
he, with drummer Anton Lada left to form the Louisiana Five. Trombonist
Harry Raderman, born in 1883 was a prolific recording artist but very little
is known about the musicians in his band. Pianist Vincent Lopez's first band
was formed with clarinetist Billy Hamilton. Tommy Gott-t/ Harold Geiser-tb/
Tony White-d was the rest of the ensemble. I have included two titles listed
in Rust's Jazz Records - Patches and Bo-La-Bo. Born in 1878, Julius Lenzberg
was musical director at B.F.Keith's Riverside Theatre by 1918 and was the
pit orchestra for the Broadway musical Nikki in 1931. Saxophonist Rudy
Wiedoeft performs the challenging "Saxema". He later recorded this at a
slower tempo for Victor I imagine to enable musicians to learn the piece.
The Tuxedo Dance Orchestra's first recording was Mary -included in volume
one of this set. It seems that the Dorsey Brothers recorded much later with
this band but little else is known, but Harry Reser directed some sides
around 1924.Recoerded in 1920 The Three Vagrants was one of the earliest
ensembles to feature the guitar. Nicolas Orlando recorded a number of sides
from 1919 - 1927 but little is known about his band.

Edison was one of the few companies to use a permanent stylus in their
Phonographs. Pathe used a sapphire ball for their vertical cut/hill and dale
recordings, but the width of the groove, they didn't allow for as much time
as the Edisons. Thomas Edison himself claimed that one of his records could
be played 1,000 times with no wear. In volume one liner notes I talked about
the issue of rumble due to the outside swelling of the organic core of
Diamond Disc records with exposure to moisture and air. I had tried years
ago to eliminate the rumble by slowing the transfer so that the cartridge
had time to move with the irregularities and reduce the rumble, but found
that the bass frequenies were compromised. The answer was adding additional
mass to my cartridge assembly, and adjusting tracking weight to compensate
for the additional weight. Because of inertia, the addional mass stabilizes
the cartridge, resulting in smoother bass response.The process was further
enhanced because of the Pickering 190D tone arm that I use that has no
vertical motion aside from the very light assembly holding the cartridge.
When the whole arm has to move vertically, as in a regular type tone arm,
the enertia will cause the rumble to be recorded. It is said that the
Broadway Dance Orchestra is a pseudonym for Vincent Lopez - but also have
information citing an augmented Original Memphis Five. Hazay Natzy's
Biltmore Hotel Orchestra was first directed by Natzy himself, in 1917 but
direction was taken over by Jack Green. Featuring William Scotti on ts,
little else is known about this band, which recorded extensively for Pathe,
Columbia, Emerson,Okeh, and Gennett, up till 1925. Don Parker was a well
known soprano and alto sax player from New York, recording for Pathe and
Edison till 1924. He played also with the Original Dixieland Jazz Band.

It seems that Dave Kaplan played piano on at least a few of the records
labelled "Atlantic Dance Orchestra". Marcheta is labelled "McNalpak's D.O"
and is actually Kaplan's Melodists.
Al Burt's Orchestra featured Vic D'Ippolito-Billy Asmus-t/ Louis De
Sentis-tb/ Joe Wirshup-as/ Joe Dubin-ts/ Ray romano-p/ Frank Di Prima-bj/
Connie Traeger-bb/ Johnny Hoffman-d On Fuzzy Wuzzy Bird a slapped sax -
either bass or baritone plays toward the end. Pianist Ernest L.Stevens had
both a trio and full band. The trio featured himself, Frank Crum-as/ Neal
Litt-bj. The full band you hear on Dirty Hands Dirty Face is Red Nichols-c/
Chuck Campbell-tb/Frank Crum-as-ts/Bill Morse-vn/ Dusty Rhoades-d. Please
note that as Red Nichols was born in 1905, he was only 18 when this was
recordsd. Chuck Campbell's name is pencilled in in Rust's Jazz discography
for the "All Star Orchestra". He accompanied Gene Austin on "The Voice Of
The Southland" in 1928 and Without That Gal in 1931. A Brunswick session
with Campbell in 1934 featured the Boswell Sisters and musicians Bunny
Berigan-t/Jimmy Dorsey-cl/ Larry Binyon-cl. A session with Bix Beiderbecke
in 1928 by the Broadway Bell Hops for Harmony started off with Bix-c/ Bill
Rank-tb/ then for the final cut in the session the lineup was Mannie
Klein-t/ Chuck Campbell-tb/ along with a steller roup of musicians.He also
played with the California Ramblers, Colonial Club Orchestra, Grey Gull
Studio Bands, the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra, backed up Jane Green on Vic
20509, the High Hatters, Sam Lanin's Ipana Troubadours, Johnny Johnson,
Roger Wolfe Kahn, George Olsen, Sid Phillips, Ben Selvin, Nat Shilkret, a
session for Gennett in 1922 with the Syncopating Seven, with Kay Thompson in
1937, the Varsity Eight, the Virginians, and played in the Victor Light

This album features two very early Leedy vibraphone Lou Chiha "Friscoe"
recordings from 1924. As a collector, I have only found British electrical
recordings of this instrument, by Ray Starita dating from 1930. However, it
would have been the later generation of vibes - with the damper pedal . They
both depended on an electric motor driving the butterfly valve, creating the
tremolo. First developed in 1921, it used steel bars and had no sustain
pedal. J.C. Deagan, Inc.'s Chief Tuner, Henry Schluter, introduced aluminum
bars and the pedal in 1927, creating the instrument as it is structured
today. Louis Armstrong used it in "Song Of The Islands" in 1929. The title
that inspired this re-visit to a project that started about 20 years ago
with a shorter compilation was "There's A Bend At The End Of The Swanee" By
Kaplan's Melodists. I didn't have that title and sourced the track from my
collegue Ben Roth - he also incuded Follow The Swallow Back Home - thanks,
Ben. The rest of the selections come from my personal collection. The Dave
Harman Orchestra recorded 2 sides for Columbia in 1924, 8 titles for Edison
in 1924 - 1925, followed by 5 titles for Bluebird in 1934. The personnel for

Reser-bj/ Unknown-bb/ Unknown-d Benjamin Albert Rolfe was born in Brasher
Falls NY in 1879 and was known as "The Boy Trumpet Wonder". He was the son
of a music director, playing piccolo and trumpet, touring with his father's
band on the U.S. east coast and Europe at a young age. After graduating high
school, he was engaged as a musical clown befor joining the Majestic Theatre
Orchestra in Utica N.Y. He went on to head the brass department at the Utica
Conservatory of Music. He went on to producing shows, leading a band, and by
1914 started his own silent film production company Rolfe Photoplays Inc,
producing over 50 films distributed through Louis B. Mayer's Metro Pictures
Corporation. He collaborated with director/screenwriter Oscar A.C. Lund
producing the 1916 drama Dorian's Divorce starring Lionel Barrymore. His
final efforts was a 15 episode series - the Master Mystery in 1919, starring
Harry Houdini. After working with Vincent Lopez - another Edison recording
artist, in 1924 but left to lead "B.A. Rolfe (Trumpet Virtuoso) and his
Palais D'Or Orchestra," and was the orchestra for a radio show starting in
1928 when he was known as "B.A. Rolfe and his Lucky Strike Orchestra" Radio
transcriptions followed in the early thirties and in 1934 and 1935 he made
two Vitaphone shorts. By 1935 - 1936 he directed the The Goodrich Silvertown
Cord Orchestra. His broadcasting continued until the late thirties, and he
was the narrator for Ripley's "Believe It Or Not" radio series. During WWII,
he assembled an all-girl orchestra to perform patriotic songs.

Edison Dance Bands #7 Recorded 1926 - 1929 CD176G
An electrically recorded Edison !!!!! The odd thing is that the first
electrically recorded Edison I acquired was a cylinder - "Me and the Man In
The Moon" by Vaughn De Leath and recorded in January 1929. It had to be one
of the last cylinders - alas destroyed in the fire at my shop. My Edison
Diamond Discs were stored near the ceiling and although the sleeves were
burning, the Diamond Discs were unscathed. The composition of Edisons was
phenolic - which has a much higher melting point than shellac. The lateral
"Needle Type" records didn't fare so well but I retrieved the sound from
them nevertheless. The "Needle Type" Edisons are the most hard to find. The
last 6 tracks are all Needle Type electrics. Thomas Edison resisted
electrical recording until long after all other labels had upgraded - aside
form the buget columbia series issued on Harmony, Diva, Velvet Tone etc. It
is said that because of his deafness, his personal phonograph has his teeth
marks in it because he clenched his teeth on the cabinet to hear it. He
disliked bass because of his hearing issues. Jazz pianist Oreste Migliaccio
was born in Naples, Italy in 1882 and moved to the U.S. in 1902. He first
started composing in 1908, with the "Gatling Gun Rag." By 1910, he was
working as a musician, directing a band at the "Peek Inn" by the early
twenties. By 1926, Oreste and his Queensland Orchestra graced the stage of
the Queensland Ballroom in New York . Personnel: Frank McNellis-Tom

Stumkoff-ts/ Ralph Esposito-bj/ Joe Tarto-bb Known vocalists with this band
were Vic Hall and Ken Christie. It is said that Red Nichols-c also played
with his band but is not confirmed. Ralph Esposito's first instument was the
violin, and it seems that he was fairly accomplished as he played "The
Flight Of The Bumble Bee", but his solo in Hello Swanee Hello got my
attention, and the solos throughout the arrangement are first class to my
mind.
