NLS Operations Alert No. 16-75 DATE : August 26, 2016 TO : Network Libraries FROM : Jane Caulton, Head, Publications and Media Section SUBJECT : Public Service Announcement (PSA) status report NLS implemented its public service announcement (PSA) campaign on June 16, 2016. The campaign will run for six months and distribute television and radio public service announcements through a contractor, who will reach out to television and radio stations to achieve support for air time. The campaign is being conducted at the national level, in response to network library requests over the years. At the conclusion of the campaign, NLS will make the videos available to the network. In the meantime the PSAs may be experienced on the Media Services site at www.loc.gov/nls/networkdocs/mediaservices/public_service/index.html<file:///C:\Users\jcau\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary%20Internet%20Files\Content.Outlook\FPRIXNA1\www.loc.gov\nls\networkdocs\mediaservices\public_service\index.html>. During the first month, television PSAs were distributed to seventeen hundred stations throughout the United States, of which 78 stations aired the PSAs 1,682 times. (Hagerstown, Maryland) � Wausau-Rhinelander, Wisconsin � Zanesville, Ohio The PSAs aired on networks as follows: Network Affiliation Stations ABC 3 CBS 6 COZ 2 CW 6 ESWG 1 Fox 15 GSWG 1 Independent 17 MET 10 MMX 1 NBC 13 PBS 1 WDCA 1 WSWG 1 Please keep in mind that broadcast stations are no longer required to air PSAs, and most use them to fill air time when programming is short. For this reason, many will shelve the materials until they have a need to fill air time, resulting in PSAs being aired much later than they were distributed.
