Oops.  Meant to write “differentiate videocassette and videodisc manifestations” in the earlier message.  It was late.  Apologies.  Main content of the message is the same.

No, not now (but once upon a time).  For many years, before RDA and LC-PCC PSs and recent PCC policy decisions, series authority records and series authorized access points differentiated manifestations of monographic series.  Now they differentiate series works and expressions, as RDA does, but not manifestations.

The two SARs you cited were created under earlier guidelines to differentiate videocassette and videocassette manifestations of the same series work and expression.  SAR no2009111230 has now been cancelled in the NAF in the LC home library system and its contents have been merged with SAR no2005039557, which now represents all manifestations of the same two-dimensional moving image content.  The SAR changes will be distributed to OCLC and other subscribers in days to come (although LC cannot tell exactly when that will happen).

The series no2009111230 Exploring society (Videodisc) is just the DVD version of no2005039557 Exploring society (which was originally on videocassette). The content is the same. Is having a new series for the DVD necessary?
