Hi Everyone -

Please join us for the next in our regular monthly series of free
Department of the Library Park Ranger Speaker Series lectures, entitled
"Centennial Voices: Oral History and Leadership Development in the National
Park Service" on Thursday, September 29th from 1:00 - 1:45 pm in Stewart
Lee Udall Department of the Interior Building's John Muir Room.

One of the stated goals of the celebration of the National Park Service’s
Centennial is to "connect with and create the next generation of park
visitors, supporters, and advocates." Park Service historians have been
assigned the task of creating plans and programs demonstrating that history
and historical thinking are as relevant to the agency’s future as to its
past. One of the ways they are doing so is by using oral history training,
project planning and interviewing to capture the knowledge and remembrances
of those associated with the Park Service. As a wave of retirements
continues to erode the Park Service’s institutional memory, they hope to
use these interviews to develop a new generation of its leaders.

Please join Park Service historian Lu Ann Jones as she demonstrates how the
National Park Service combines the vital work of documenting their history
with mentoring the next generation to support and administer the agency
well into the next hundred years.

All that are interested are invited. The Rachel Carson Room is located in
the basement level of the Stewart Lee Udall Department of the Interior
Building, towards the back of and adjacent to the Interior Department
cafeteria. The Stewart Lee Udall Department of the Interior Building is
located at 1849 C Street, NW in Washington. Space for the program is
